Must have:
- Diapers – Note that for 6 lb baby, I used preemie diapers for about a month before moving up to newborn size
- Butt Paste – Baby diaper rashes are so sad. There are so many options, but apparently the higher the zinc oxide the stronger it is to treat a rash
- Diaper trash can – Do yourself the favor upfront and just get a separate trash can. This is the one the pediatrician offices use as well.
- Diaper wipes
- Changing pad and/or station – most suitable depends on your space configuration
- Formula – Even if you are going to breast feed, it is good to have your feeding and milk options in case you’re having trouble
- Bottles – Even if you’re not planning to use this yet, it is good to have your feeding and milk options ready at home
- Pump – Even if you’re not going to do this until later, it is good to have your feeding and milk options ready at home
- Bassinet for baby to sleep in, wherever you choose to have them sleep
- Swaddle – or you can just keep using the one from the hospital. Velcro ones are easy.
- A few onesies. Though, your baby might just be in a diaper and a swaddle for awhile. Won’t be bathing them up front. (6 lb baby wore preemie size until 8 lbs, then moved up to newborn.)
Nice to have:
- Baby lounger – Nice to place the newborn in any room using this
- Baby monitor – May not need if you are with the baby non stop at first
- White noise machine – Didn’t use immediately, but use more as you go
- Burp cloth for spit up – You can use whatever, but all the baby stuff is made of muslin which is light, soft, and absorbent
